Modern Day Slavery in Focus

The 2015 U.S. Trafficking in Persons (TIP) Report cited Hong Kong as a ‘destination, transit, and source territory for men, women, and children subjected to sex trafficking and forced labour’.  The Government’s response to the 2015 TIP Report has been to simply deny the existence or prevalence of human trafficking as an issue affecting Hong Kong, a position that it has taken consistently for the last seven years.  In response to this impasse Justice Centre Hong Kong embarked on a year long research project to examine the prevalence and patterns of human trafficking, forced labour and other forms of exploitation among the migrant domestic worker population.  Today, March 15th 2016, Justice Centre released the findings of this research which reveal a disturbing picture.  The findings have been widely reported in the media and the full report can be downloaded from the Justice Centre website.  It is to be hoped that the research will prove a springboard for constructive engagement with the Government and other stakeholders to address some of the environmental and structural challenges that allow conditions of forced labour to exist in Hong Kong.
