Event | Employer’s Duty of Care for Employees Working Overseas

With Hong Kong’s position as a major financial centre and a commercial hub in the Asia Pacific region, and with the impact of globalisation resulting in increased transnational business opportunities, Hong Kong based companies are faced with an ever-increasing requirement to send their employees abroad on business-related activities.  As a result the modern day workplace has changed dramatically in terms of the demands it places upon employees. Many employees are expected and required to be mobile, flexible and ready to travel at short notice in pursuit of business opportunities, or to manage operations, personnel or crises overseas. Others are required to spend longer periods of time on assignment or secondment in a foreign jurisdiction as part of their training, knowledge exchange or career development.  Whilst many employees welcome the prospect of overseas travel and assignments, employees traveling and working overseas may be exposed to a number of risks that fall outside of the scope of risks contemplated by health and safety management systems applicable to workplaces in Hong Kong.

On Tuesday May 24th CCPL will be hosting a Lunchtime Talk and Panel Discussion to discuss the legal and corporate social responsibility implications of this changing landscape, and to offer practical recommendations to mitigate such risks.  During the lunchtime talk I will be joined by Peter Messervy from CLP Holdings, and David Ralph from PCCW who are responsible for overseeing the health and safety of employees in their respective organisations.

Time: Tuesday May 24th 2016: 12.30pm – 2.00pm

Venue: Academic Conference Room, 11/F Cheng Yu Tung Tower, Centennial Campus, The University of Hong Kong.
