Event | Duty of Care Conference 2018

It was a pleasure to have been one of the speakers at this year’s Duty of Care Conference which took place on April 26th, 2018, and was co-hosted by the Employers’ Federation of Hong Kong and the International SOS Foundation.  The opening remarks were made by Mr. Kwan from the Commercial Office of the Economic Affairs Department of the Liaison Office of the Central People’s Government in HKSAR.

My presentation focused on employers’ duty of care from a legal perspective and in particular, the need for employers to respond to the changing levels and nature of risk presented by the increase in work-related travel among their employee populations.

In my closing remarks, I presented a summary of a draft Code of Practice; the product of my consultations with a working group of industry professionals who, by sharing their expertise and best practices, have produced a health & safety protocol that can be used as a reference tool by Hong Kong employers of all sizes and across all industries when thinking about how best to protect employees required to travel overseas.  In the coming months, we will be asking the Employers’ Federation of Hong Kong and the Labour Department to comment on the draft Code of Practice with an aim to have this published by the end of the year.
